Ano Poroia is a charming village located in the Serres region of Macedonia.
Nestled on the foothills of Mount Belas, it had 1,529 residents according to the 2001 census. The name of the village is of Greek origin.
The first inhabitants were descendants of Vlachs from Moschopolis who arrived in the early 19th century. Later, refugees from Asia Minor, uprooted from their ancestral homes, settled in the village and were welcomed with goodwill and hospitality by the local community. Over time, the blending of these refugees with the local population shaped the village¢s unique character.
The village¢s economy traditionally revolved around livestock farming and agriculture, with a particular focus on tobacco cultivation. It also boasted a thriving local market, including bakeries, grocery stores, cobblers, textile shops, tailors, taverns, cheese shops, butcheries, cafés, and entertainment venues. In 1935, Ano Poroia was electrified with its own independent diesel-powered plant.
Ano Poroia has always stood out for its rich cultural life, reflected in its large polyphonic choir and well-equipped Philharmonic orchestra.
Thanks to its dry climate and the stunning natural surroundings, Ano Poroia attracts visitors from near and far, offering both a tranquil retreat and a center for local recreation.
