Syvota is located in the northwestern part of the Thesprotia region, 23 km from Igoumenitsa. It occupies a coastal, lowland, and hilly area north of the former mouth of the Kalamas River, stretching all the way to the Greek-Albanian border.

The municipality of Syvota consists of five communities, each distinguished by its natural beauty and rich, turbulent history. Due to its strategic location, the area of Syvota was historically coveted by Venetian and Ottoman conquerors. In 1479, Syvota came under permanent Ottoman rule and soon became one of the most important ports in western Greece, even hosting a French consulate. Notably, Syvota was the site of a historic meeting between Ali Pasha, Napoleon, and French diplomats.

Today, Syvota is one of the most charming fishing villages in Thesprotia. It has developed into a tourist destination offering visitors peaceful holidays surrounded by nature. Each year, more travelers choose Syvota for their summer vacations, drawn by its pristine beaches and idyllic landscapes. Exploring the wider municipality and its picturesque settlements fills visitors with unforgettable sights. Be sure to visit the abandoned old village of Syvota, where the remaining houses showcase unique architectural features, along with historic churches and traditional cobbled streets.

During your stay, visit the scenic village of Ragi and the Ragi Monastery, dating back to the 11th century. After decades of abandonment, it has been restored and is now open to visitors. Also worth exploring are the village of Gitani, the ancient capital of Thesprotia, and Strovíli, built around a conical hill with the remnants of a fortress on its summit. According to local legend, Strovíli was the old Syvota destroyed by the Ottomans, and the women who fell into the sea are said to remain petrified beneath its waters.

Today, Syvota is one of Thesprotia’s most popular destinations, perfect for summer or winter getaways, offering the tranquility and charm of mainland Greece’s countryside.
