The famous Vai Palm Forest is the most photographed natural attraction in Crete. It is located at the easternmost edge of the island, 28 km from Sitia and 98 km from Agios Nikolaos.
It covers an area of approximately 250 acres and is estimated to contain more than 5,000 palm trees. It is the only naturally growing palm forest in Europe.
Local tradition says that the forest was created from the seeds of dates discarded in the area by Phoenician traders who anchored at Cape Sidero. However it was formed, the palm forest, besides its natural beauty, has enormous ecological value for Crete. In the wetland created between the palms and the beach, many species of animals and birds find refuge. For this reason, the area is strictly protected, and camping in the forest is prohibited.
You can swim at its exotic beach with its light, almost silvery sand and enjoy the uniquely beautiful landscape.
