Located 6 km northeast of Chania is the Akrotiri Peninsula. The area boasts incredible natural beauty, charming small villages, and significant religious monuments. The harbor of Akrotiri is the hill of Prophet Elias, offering breathtaking views. There, visitors can see the tombs of the Venizelos family, the Byzantine chapel of Prophet Elias, and the beautiful gardens perfect for leisurely walks.
In the small village of Koumares, built on the Akrotiri Peninsula, there is an important Orthodox monument: the Monastery of the Holy Trinity of Tzagarolon. It was founded in the 17th century by two monks from the Tzagarolon family, from whom it takes its name. The monastery suffered severe damage during the years of the revolution at the hands of the Turks. Today, it houses the Cretan Ecclesiastical School.
Another historic monastery in the area is the Gouverneto Monastery, founded in 1537. Its unique architecture is striking, combining several Venetian elements with Byzantine and royal styles.
