Monemvasia Castle

Monemvasia is consisted of two settlements. Each one of them is located at a different level and has separate fortification. At Epano Poli, which is now uninhabited, you will see the remains of buildings from the Byzantine and post-Byzantine period. The most significant is the octagonal domed temple of Saint Sophia. Many researchers identify this as the Church of Odigitria dating back to 1150.

Kato Poli is built at the acclivitous part southeastwards of the rock. It is inhabited until our days. The medieval town is a pole of attraction for thousands of visitors all year round. The Archaeological Department has taken over the reconstruction of old buildings, which now has a glory of old times. The tall stone-built houses, the narrow cobblestone paths and the churches take visitors back to past times. Many of the buildings operate now as traditional guesthouses. The atmosphere is really romantic and guarantees of an unforgettable stay.
The settlement is surrounded by a tall wall, two gates eastwards and westwards and a small exit to the sea.

Take a walk around Kato Poli and admire the imposing churches. The temple of Elkomenos Christ is a basilica church with a cupola and a narthex as and an Episcopal seat. In its interior you will have the chance to see important icons of the post Byzantine period.
The temple of Panagia Mirtidiotissa was built around 1700. It has an impressive wooden chancel screen. The temple of Saint Nikolaos is a dome-shaped basilica church with cupola. It was built around 1703.
The church of Panagia Chrisafitissa was found during the 17th century. It has a square champer and a small cupola.
Other smaller temples are: Saint Andreas, Saint Anna the Catholic, Saint Anna of the Second Venetian Rule (1690 - 1720), Saint Demetrios, etc. It is worth visiting the Muslim Mosque. The building dates back to the 16th century, but was turned into a Frankish temple during the Frankish Rule. During the 18th century, it became a mosque once again. Today it hosts the Archaeological Collection.
