Apolakkia Dam, located on the southwestern side of Rhodes, is a hidden paradise and one of the most unique natural attractions on the island. The artificial lake created by the dam's construction in the late 1980s has evolved into a vital wetland, attracting numerous species of migratory birds and rare flora. The most distinctive and photographed spot of the dam is the small chapel of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, which sits within the basin and becomes partially submerged in winter when the lake's water level rises. In very close proximity lies the historic monastery of Agios Georgios Vardas, a significant 13th-century Byzantine monument featuring exceptional frescoes.
