Kerkyra, also known as Corfu, is one of the most beautiful and popular islands in Greece, located in the Ionian Sea. It is famous for its lush green landscapes, stunning beaches, and rich multicultural history, which is visible in its unique architecture and traditions.
The heart of the island is Corfu Town (Kerkyra), whose Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Unlike most of Greece, Corfu was never occupied by the Ottoman Empire; instead, it was ruled for centuries by the Venetians, followed by brief periods of French and British rule. This history gives the town a distinctly European, aristocratic feel, featuring narrow cobblestone alleys called kantounia, grand palaces, and the famous Liston promenade, which was inspired by the Rue de Rivoli in Paris.
Beyond the town, Kerkyra offers incredible natural beauty and diverse coastlines. The island features world-famous beaches like Paleokastritsa, known for its dramatic cliffs and emerald waters, and Canal d'Amour in Sidari, famous for its unique sandstone formations. It is also a very musical island, home to numerous marching bands (philharmonic societies) that fill the streets with music, especially during the island's legendary Easter celebrations.
