The Monastery of Panagia Tourliani is located in the traditional village of Ano Mera and stands as the most important religious landmark in Mykonos. Founded in 1542 by two monks who sought refuge there from the island of Paros, it was named after an icon of the Virgin Mary found in the nearby area of Tourlos. The monastery was extensively rebuilt in 1767, acquiring its current grand form.
The architecture of the monastery is highly impressive, featuring a fortress-like structure and a beautifully crafted marble bell tower in its courtyard. Inside the church, the main highlight is the magnificent wooden iconostasis (altar screen), which was carved in Florence in 1775 and features intricate gold-leaf details alongside post-Byzantine icons of great historical value.
A small ecclesiastical museum also operates within the complex. Visitors there can admire old icons, holy vessels, embroidered vestments, and the monastery's original bells, offering a deep insight into the spiritual and cultural history of the island.
