About Lasithi

The Lasithi prefecture is the easternmost prefecture of Crete. It is a place of contrasts. It combines the wild beauty of its mountains with the lush, fertile plains and the picturesque villages with the modern infrastructure of its cities. The plural is not a figure of speech. It is another peculiarity of Lasithi, as in the prefecture we meet three large cities. The Agios Nikolaos, the capital of the prefecture, which brings together all the elements of a modern city while maintaining its traditional identity. The Ierapetra, the nymph of the Libyan, as they call it, and the Sitia, with its untouched - by time and especially by human interventions - beauties. Lasithi has very good tourist infrastructure, while the prefecture's summer resorts have gained international fame. Like Elounda, the port of Agios Nikolaos, Ierapetra, the southernmost city of Europe with its unique physiognomy, and Sitia with the magical Palm Forest of Vai, the only one of its kind in all of Europe. The history of Lasithi is reflected in the archaeological sites and in all the notable monuments that one encounters during a tour of the prefecture. The ruins of the ancient city of Lato, the palace of Zakros, the Minoan settlement in Palaiokastro, the temple of Dictaean Zeus, the fortress of Kales, the Spinalonga and the Byzantine monasteries outline a significant route. The natural beauty of the place moves every nature lover. From the fertile soils of the prefecture, producers of the largest quantities of fruits and vegetables in Crete. Also, Lasithi is famous for the high-quality oil it produces and its raisins. In addition to fertile plains and green landscapes in Lasithi, we also find many wild beauties. The Lasithiotika Mountains with their imposing mountainous masses that take one's breath away, were a safe haven for the revolutionaries. Today, the Lasithi prefecture, although it does not present the same tourist traffic as the other prefectures of Crete, is considered one of the most popular destinations in Greece as it offers a wide range of options for its visitors. It is recommended for nature trails, for religious tourism, for historical and archaeological searches. While its dreamy beaches make the earthly paradise for every lover of swimming and water sports. Visit Lasithi and travel to the magic of the Cretan countryside!
