Shepherd Shelter Experience, Melidoni Cave & Olive Oil Factory

In this experience you will be welcomed in the Shepherd's shelter, where shepherds will share the passion for the distinct Cretan traditions and lifestyle. The visit to the Shepherd’s Shelter offers a life-time experience to every visitor. You will have the opportunity to view the sheep milking, join the cheese-making, experience the sheep-shearing or participate in the fiesta of raki distillation (it depends on the season). You will help with the herbs collection and traditional cooking and you will indulge yourselves with the local delicacies and wine.

At the Paraschakis Olive Oil Factory, you will discover the traditions behind one of Crete’s most important products, extra virgin olive oil. During the visit, you will take a short guided tour of the factory to see the modern olive oil production process, from cleaning and crushing the olives to cold pressing and storage. The host will explain how olives are harvested, how high quality olive oil is produced, and why Cretan olive oil is a key part of the Mediterranean diet. After the tour, you will enjoy a guided olive oil tasting, learning how to identify quality olive oil by aroma, flavor, and color. This stop offers a great opportunity to learn about traditional Cretan agriculture, taste authentic local products, and purchase olive oil and regional specialties directly from the producer.

In the traditional village of Melidoni, you will experience the charm of authentic rural Crete. You will stroll through the quiet village streets, admire the traditional stone houses, and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of local life. The village square offers a great spot to take photos, meet locals, and learn about the history and culture of the area. You will also have time to stop at a local café to enjoy a coffee or refreshment while taking in the beautiful countryside views that surround the village. This short stop allows you to experience the traditional architecture, local lifestyle, and peaceful character of a genuine Cretan village.

At Melidoni Cave, you will explore one of Crete’s most impressive and historically significant caves. Upon arrival, you will descend into the large underground chamber where you can admire the stunning natural formations of stalactites and stalagmites that have formed over thousands of years. Walking along the marked paths, you will learn about the cave’s fascinating geology as well as its important role in Cretan history. Inside the cave stands a memorial dedicated to the villagers who sought refuge here during the Ottoman period, making the site both a natural wonder and a place of historical remembrance.
