  1. 1

    Stop 1

This 12th-century Byzantine gem is the most iconic landmark of Kalamata! While the original domed section dates back to the Middle Ages, a larger expansion was added during the Venetian period (17th century) to create the beautiful structure you see today.

    Stop 2

Dominating the historic square, this grand Cathedral is the spiritual heart of the city! Founded in 1860 and completed in 1873, its imposing Byzantine-style architecture with twin bell towers makes it a true masterpiece. The church is home to the miraculous Icon of Panagia Ypapanti, the patron saint of Kalamata, which dates back to the 14th century. Legend has it that the icon was found in the ruins of an ancient stable during the Ottoman rule! Every year on February 2nd, the city hosts its biggest celebration here, attracting pilgrims from all over Greece. Like many of our treasures, the Cathedral survived the 1886 and 1986 earthquakes and was meticulously restored to its current glory.
