Salamina is the closest island to Athens in the Saronic Gulf and the largest in the group. It is located in the northern part of the Saronic and is separated from the coasts of Attica by the Strait of Pachi in the northwest and the Strait of Piraeus to the east. To the north of Salamina, the Gulf of Eleusis extends. Salamina has a remarkable historical journey to show. A key moment in its ancient history was the famous Battle of Salamina, which took place in 480 BC between the Athenian fleet and the Persians in the straits between them. Today, Salamina is divided into two municipalities. The municipality of Salamina, with its capital in Kouloúria, and the municipality of Ampelakia, with its capital in Ampelakia. Administratively, Salamina belongs to the Piraeus Prefecture. The changes in its landscapes keep the interest of visitors intact.
