Built in the 5th century BC under the leadership of Pericles and designed with the artistic genius of Pheidias, the Parthenon was dedicated to Athena, the city’s patron goddess. Continue to the Panathenaic Stadium, originally built in 330 BC for the Panathenaic Games and rebuilt in marble by Herodes Atticus in 144 AD to hold 60,000 spectators. Abandoned after the rise of Christianity, it was excavated in the 19th century and hosted the Zappas Olympics before being restored for the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. Today, it remains the only stadium in the world constructed entirely of marble.

Overlooking Syntagma Square, the neoclassical Hellenic Parliament building was once the Royal Palace of King Otto. Built between 1836 and 1843 by Bavarian architect Friedrich von Gärtner, it was the first major palace of modern Greece. After a fire in 1909 ended its royal role, it was later transformed into the home of the Greek Parliament, where the country’s political decisions are made today.
