Η Μήλος υπήρξε αξιόλογο κέντρο του Κυκλαδικού πολιτισμού και γνώρισε μεγάλη ανάπτυξη χάρη στο ασφαλές φυσικό λιμάνι και το πλούσιο υπέδαφος της. Στο νησί υπήρχαν πλούσια κοιτάσματα οψιδιανού, υλικού χρήσιμου για την κατασκευή όπλων και εργαλείων τον οποίο οι κάτοικοι της Μήλου εμπορεύονταν στην Κρήτη, τα νησιά και την Ηπειρωτική Ελλάδα.
