About Archanes
Archanes is a beautiful town located 16 km from Heraklion, renowned for its exquisite wine produced from its fertile vineyards. It is built on the slope of a hill and is characterized by lush surroundings and abundant waters.
Archanes has a long and rich history. The area has been continuously inhabited since ancient times. The ruins of ancient settlements in the wider region reveal that during the Minoan era, Archanes was a city with a developed economy and cultural level. Among the archaeological sites, particular interest lies in the ruins of the Minoan town and the Minoan palace. Notably, excavations in the auxiliary areas of the palace uncovered an ancient wine press.
Additionally, at the site of Anemospilia, a Minoan sanctuary dating back to 1700 B.C. was discovered, while on the hill of Fourní lies the Minoan cemetery dating back to 2500 B.C., where invaluable burial artifacts have been unearthed.
