The Municipality of Alagonia was a municipality in the Messinia Prefecture, established by Royal Decree on April 9, 1835, and abolished in 1912.
It took its name from the ancient city of Alagonia, which was one of the 18 cities of the Koinon of the Free Laconians. According to Leake, the city was located near the Frankish castle of Zarnata. Pausanias mentions that it had sanctuaries dedicated to Dionysus and Artemis and was thirty stadia away from Gerinia.
In its original composition, it included the settlements of Sitsova (Alagonia), Megali Anastasova (Nedousa), Mikri Anastasova (Piges), Tsernitsa (Artemisia), and Koutsava (Lada and Karvelio). The municipality also included the monasteries of Mardakiou (Megali Anastasova), Saint Anthony (Sitsova), Mele (Tsernitsa), Sidiroporta (Karvelio), Saints Apostles (Mikri Anastasova), Saint John (Sitsova), Emialon (Karvelio), Lagkada (Lada), and Prophet Elias (Chanakia).
