Zalongo is one of Greece¢s most historic mountains, located north of Preveza and part of the Kassopaean mountain range. Its name is forever linked with the heroic women of Souli and the legendary Dance of Zalongo.
The mountainous village of Zalongo clings to the slopes of the mountain that shares its name. In 1803, a historic event took place that became a symbol of the Greek struggle to overthrow Ottoman rule. After Ali Pasha captured Souli following years of fierce and bloody battles, the women and children of the village refused to surrender. They fled to the steep cliffs of Zalongo and chose to leap to their deaths rather than lose their freedom. The haunting images of mothers holding their infants as they fell became known around the world. These heroic moments remain etched in Greek history and collective memory.
A monument was erected at the site in 1961 to honor these courageous women. Today, travelers can climb the 410 steps leading to the memorial from the nearby Monastery of Saint Demetrius. Each year, commemorative events take place here on the second Sunday of August.
