Anogeia is the most famous mountain village in the Rethymno region, located 52 km from the city. It is a traditional village where Cretan heritage remains alive, reflected in both the appearance and the warm hospitality of its residents. The locals, known for their distinctive black shirts, are renowned for their friendliness and generosity. Visitors are welcomed with plenty of raki and local delicacies. While their strong accent might take some getting used to, you¢ll surely enjoy it—especially when the sharp sound of the lyra accompanies the impromptu Cretan mantinades, as the villagers are always ready to celebrate.
From Anogeia, the famous Idaion Cave is easily accessible.
