The Folkloric Museum of Serifos is one of the island's most significant cultural gems, offering visitors an authentic journey back in time to the daily life of past generations. Located in Kato Chora, in a picturesque and traditional setting, it is housed in a building that exemplifies classic Cycladic architecture. The museum was established in 1976 through the initiative of the Association of Serifians, with the primary goal of rescuing, preserving, and showcasing the island's rich cultural heritage.
Inside the museum, the rooms are carefully arranged to recreate the layout of a traditional Serifian home. The collections feature a wide variety of everyday items, traditional costumes, textiles, embroideries, and household utensils. Of particular interest are the tools of traditional local trades, which highlight the inhabitants' historical engagement with agriculture, livestock breeding, and seafaring.
A dedicated section of the museum focuses on the mining history of Serifos, an industry that profoundly shaped the island's economic and social development during the 19th and 20th centuries. On display are mineral samples from the rich subsoil of the island, alongside authentic tools and artifacts used by the miners inside the tunnels. Behind the museum building, a small open-air theater hosts various cultural events, lectures, and performances during the summer months, making the museum a vibrant cultural hub for both locals and travelers.
