The Windmills at Gyra, officially captured on the map as the Lefkada Windmill , represent one of the most nostalgic, iconic, and photographed landmarks on the island of Lefkada. They are lined up along the narrow, sandy spit of land known as Gyra, which loops around the local lagoon, separating it from the open Ionian Sea just a short distance from Lefkada Town. This specific strip of coastline was historically chosen because it is heavily exposed to the strong northwestern winds, making it the ultimate location for harnessing wind power.
During the 19th century, a total of twelve windmills operated along this narrow coastline, grinding massive quantities of grain and wheat, which were predominantly imported from Russia and the Black Sea regions. These mills possessed distinct names inspired by historical figures, mythology, or their owners, including "Orlof," "Metternich," and "Canning." Architecturally, they were robust, cylindrical stone structures fitted with conical wooden roofs and large canvas sails, built following a traditional Mediterranean design tailored to endure the fierce seaside weather.
Today, only a few of these historic windmills survive in good condition, having been beautifully restored and repurposed into unique private residences, cafes, or accommodation spaces while keeping their historic exterior character intact. The sweeping beach expanding right in front of them, running from Agios Ioannis to the castle, is globally renowned among kitesurfing and windsurfing enthusiasts due to the reliable daily thermal winds.
